In the 16th episode, the final episode, of the SBS Monday-Tuesday drama “Our Beloved Summer” (written by Lee Na-eun and directed by Kim Yoon-jin), the melodic but happy ending of Choi Woong (Choi Woo-sik) and Kook Yeon-soo (Kim Da-mi) was revealed.

On this episode, Choi Woong decided to study abroad as a new start for his career to get inspiration as an artist.

Woong said to Yeon-soo, his friend and lover who has been by his side for a long time, “Let’s leave together. I can’t live without you,” he said, confessing his feelings. Yeon-soo told Woong, “I’ll think about it,” and asked for time.

Woong grew into an adult, and Yeon-soo became a warm-hearted girlfriend next to Woong. In the meantime, winter came and Woong left for abroad as planned. Yeon-soo had her own work and could not go with Woong. She did her best in her work and time passed.

At the end of the broadcast, Woong confessed to Yeonsoo on the phone, saying, “I love you, Yeonsoo ah”. After returning to Korea, Woong followed Yeonsoo when she was on her way back home from work. The two reunited in a beautiful scene. That summer, they have proved that they care for each other more than anyone else. After all the ups and downs, Woong and Yeonsoo finally had their happy ending and became husband and wife.

Throughout 16 episodes, the drama did not miss any chance to show the tension of a melodrama and delicately portrayed the joys and sorrows of these young people. Stories about lovers, friends, and memories of youth that everyone would have experienced left a resonance in the viewers’ hearts, like a beautiful panorama or the sunshine of summer.

Actors Choi Woo-sik and Kim Da-mi have painted a self-portrait of their youth with fresh aspects when playing characters in their teens and in their 20s. The conflicts in relationships of friends and lovers who cannot forget each other that sometimes leave small wounds to each other are delicately described. As time passes and everyone has become busier with their daily life, youth goes by in a blink of an eye, but the existence of people who have been strong supporters of each other throughout all this time can also be the driving force behind their endurance of life for a long time. The joy of a relationship that everyone could have experienced at any point in life was the core emotion of this series. The drama also delivered the message that we should hold hands and love each other as much as we want.

The drama did not record high ratings. However, remaining as a well-made melodrama like a welcome rain for SBS after such a long time, “Our Beloved Summer” gained numerous enthusiastic fans. This is the birth of a well-made melodrama that is not too obvious or burdensome to watch but has a clear storyline and deep meanings inside.
