Choi Hyun-wook Addresses Cigarette Butt Littering Controversy and Apologizes at ‘High Cookie’ Press Conference

“I didn’t realize my immaturity. I will take responsibility and work hard in my acting”

Choi Hyun-wook has opened up about the recent controversy surrounding his disposal of cigarette butts on the streets. On October 23rd, a press conference for new drama ‘High Cookie’ was held at CGV Yongsan iPark Mall in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu. The event was attended by director Song Min-yeop, as well as actors Kim Moo-yeol, Choi Hyun-wook, Jung Da-bin, and Nam Ji-hyun.

The event gained more attention due to Choi Hyun-wook’s first official appearance since his controversy. As a result, he received the most questions during the Q&A session.

Choi Hyun-wook expressed his remorse for the controversy, saying, “I am deeply sorry to many people for causing concern. I have reflected on my actions through advice and guidance from many people, and I will make an effort to take responsibility in the future.”

However, questions from reporters about Choi Hyun-wook did not end with a single query. In ‘High Cookie,’ he plays Ho-soo, a boy who maintains top grades despite poverty. When asked about the juxtaposition between his diligent character as Ho-soo and his recent controversy, Choi Hyun-wook once again expressed his apologies, “I am sorry for causing harm to the drama.”

He continued, “My character doesn’t have a lot of screen time. As the story progresses, his secrets will be revealed. You will be able to see hidden desires in him, not just innocence.”

Prior to this, Choi Hyun-wook stirred controversy when a video of him smoking and littering a cigarette butt on the street. His agency later issued an apology statement.

At the press conference, Choi Hyun-wook remained silent and maintained a serious expression throughout.

Choi Hyun-wook’s character Ho-soo in ‘High Cookie’ is portrayed as calm and subdued, rather than cheerful. Director Song commented, “After the first script reading, I asked Choi Hyun-wook to look even more gaunt. Choi Hyun-wook said he did a lot of research on how to appear smaller, carefully studying each small movement.”

Nam Ji-hyun also noted, “He is an actor known for improvising a lot, but for this role, he seemed to have controlled himself more. It’s a restrained character, and I could feel that he had done a lot of research.”

As the event concluded, Choi Hyun-wook shared his final thoughts, “I will make an effort to return as a better person,” and he left the event with a deeply reflective expression.
