According to director Wong Jing, Cecilia Cheung gradually stepped away from the screen due to health issues. Before becoming one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated beauties, the actress endured a turbulent childhood.

In a recent interview with China Times, Wong Jing praised Cecilia Cheung as a “genius actress” with an exceptional ability to immerse herself in a role instantly, without requiring much preparation. He highlighted her versatility and natural emotional depth, recalling a moment when she was on the phone but, upon hearing “Get ready to film,” immediately transformed into her character and delivered tears on cue.

Her talent has long been recognized within the industry, but Wong Jing revealed that Cecilia’s health problems in recent years led her to retreat from films. She has frequently suffered from serious abdominal pain, at times requiring hospitalization. As a result, she shifted her focus toward variety shows and commercial activities, which are less physically demanding and more financially rewarding.

Wong Jing added that film work is grueling, often demanding 15–16 hours of filming per day, which is unsustainable for Cecilia’s health. Moreover, as a mother of three sons, she prioritized her family responsibilities over the exhausting demands of cinema.

Cecilia Cheung rose to fame in the late 1990s through commercials before moving into film. With her striking looks and captivating performances, she quickly became a sought-after star. At just 24, she won Best Actress at the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards for Lost in Time and left a strong mark with films such as Fly Me to Polaris, King of Comedy, and Running on Karma.

However, Wong Jing also shed light on her difficult childhood. While studying in Australia, Cecilia and her sister often struggled financially, at times sharing a single packet of instant noodles because their family failed to send money. She took on various part-time jobs just to survive until her eventual return to Hong Kong, where her beauty and talent propelled her to stardom.
