Candidates for MTV VMAs 2022 are announced, BTS and BLACKPINK took the spotlight

BTS and BLACKPINK will face each other and other foreign artists for awards.

K-pop stars BTS and BLACKPINK will compete with famous overseas artists for two major categories of MTV VMAs 2022’s “Group of the Year” and “Best Metaverse Performance”.

As the names BTS and BLACKPINK are added side by side to the list of candidates for “Group of the Year” announced on the official website of “MTV VMAs 2022” on August 20th (KST), fans around the world are paying attention to their voting results.

The title track “Yet To Come”, released by BTS on June 10th, stood out in the global music streaming market, ranking No. 1 on the Billboard global chart, and is receiving positive reviews, especially with enthusiastic support from ARMY fans globally.

Earlier, BTS bagged the “Best Group”, “Best K-pop” and “Song of Summer” Award in MTV VMAs 2021 and “Best Pop”, “Best K-pop”, “Best Choreography”, and “Best Group” in MTV VMAs 2020.

BLACKPINK also recently released the pre-released song “Pink Venom” in its second full-length album “Born Pink” and topped the iTunes Worldwide Song Chart, successfully preheating for the release of its second full-length album title song.

In particular, the music video of “Pink Venom” surpassed 100 million views in 29 hours after its release, breaking their previous record with “How You Like That,” the fastest BLACKPINK’s video to receive 100 million views in 32 hours. As a result, BLACKPINK’s presence on the stage of MTV VMAs in the U.S. for the first time is drawing attention as a K-pop girl group.

In addition to BTS and BLACKPINK, the nominees for “Group of the Year” included American hip-hop duo City Girls, alternative rock band Pooh Fighters, alternative rock band Imagine Dragons, punk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, four-member rock band Moneskin from Rome, Bruno Mars and Anderson Pac. British synth-pop singer Charlie XCX, American singer-songwriter Ariana Grande, pop singer Justin Bieber and American duo Twenty One Pilots were nominated for “Best Metaverse Performance.”

Meanwhile, in addition to “Group of the Year” and “Best Metaverse Performance,” BTS was once again nominated for “Best K-pop” after last year’s win. “Permission to Dance” released in July last year and “My Universe” released with Coldplay in September last year were also nominated. Jungkook, a member of BTS, is seeking to win the “Song of Summer” award with “Left and Right” released on June 24 in collaboration with Charlie Puth. As a result, BTS will be nominated for a total of six categories.

In addition to “Group of the Year,” Black Pink was nominated for “Best Metaverse Performance”. Lisa, BLACKPINK’s member, added her name to the list of candidates for “Best K-pop” as a solo singer. As a result, BLACKPINK is aiming for three awards.

In addition to Lisa, BTS and BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TWICE and ITZY were also listed as candidates for “Best K-pop.”

MTV VMAs 2022 will be broadcast live on MTV at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on August 28th (local time).
