BTS V’s solo records lackluster performance despite grand efforts: What is the reason?

The 2 pre-release tracks for BTS V’s solo are not doing extremely well on music charts, posing questions.

Recently, BTS V dropped 2 pre-release tracks for his solo mini-album “Layover”. Collaborating with Min Hee Jin for the creative direction and boasting 5 MVs for 5 songs, BTS V truly went all out for his solo and captured significant attention from fans and the public alike.

So far, however, it seems that BTS V’s solo records lackluster performance despite grand efforts, as the 2 pre-release songs, “Love Me Again” and “Rain Days” only achieved modest results on music charts.

Specifically, “Love Me Again” and “Rainy Days” have both been rising through the charts. However, their rankings are not overly promising. On the South Korean music charts, “Love Me Again” debuted at #36 on MelOn, while “Rainy Days” secured the #71 spot on MelOn, failing to make the Flo chart on the first day. As BTS V has such a huge fandom and high public anticipation, these numbers are rather underwhelming.

It is undoubted that V is one of the most famous idols in the Kpop industry. However, both of his pre-release tracks fail to stay within Spotify US’s Top 200 charts for more than 1 day. With these achievements, it will be challenging for the BTS member to make it to the top of Billboard Hot 100 the following week.

At the same time, while the MV for “Love Me Again” set a record for being one of the fastest Kpop solo MV to reach 1 million views on YouTube, it only achieved 36 million views after four days of release – an impressive number for a Kpop artist but falling behind the “Seven” MV of fellow BTS member Jungkook. Meanwhile, “Rainy Days” had an even more modest YouTube performance, accumulating 15 million views after three days.

    • Day 1: #149
    • Day 2: OUT
  • “Rainy Days” rankings on Spotify US:

    • Day 2: OUT

Of course, V’s solo debut did exceptionally well for a Kpop artist. However, with its grandeur scale, the two pre-release songs so far seem to have not lived up to expectations.

Previously, Jungkook’s solo with “Seven” quickly dominated the music scene, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and breaking Miley Cyrus’s record as the fastest song to reach 100 million streams on Spotify.

So, why is it that V’s chart rankings are modest compared to that of his group member? There are actually multiple factors that can explain this phenomenon.

First, the manner and timing of V’s solo is a major element. Previously on August 8th, V unexpectedly unveiled the tracklist for his solo album “Layover”, and just two days later on August 10th, he suddenly dropped the MVs for “Love Me Again” and “Rainy Days.” With this rushed promotion schedule, it’s difficult for fans to focus and boost the view count and chart rankings to high levels.

Second, the solo music of V itself can also be considered a reason. With their gentle R&B  sounds “Love Me Again” and “Rainy Days”, simply don’t carry the same “viral” value compared to other Kpop songs with catchy hooks and dance challenges. Instead, the songs simply carry V’s lovely messages and enriches the narrative of his solo album. They are also pre-release tracks, and not the major title.

On the other hand, the MV and audio for BTS V’s title track “Slow Dancing” will be released on September 8th. It is only then that promotional activities of V will go into full blow. Therefore, it is simply unfair to compare pre-release songs with the title.
