RM of BTS has become the center of controversy following allegations of smoking in a non-smoking area during a recent visit to Japan.
According to reports from Japanese weekly magazine Weekly Bunshun, RM was spotted smoking in a building corridor after attending BTS’s concert at Tokyo Dome.
Photos released by the outlet show him holding a cigarette while chatting with acquaintances. The issue arises from the fact that the location was reportedly a designated non-smoking area, with no separate smoking zone inside the building.

The report further alleges that despite warnings from staff, RM and his group continued smoking in the corridor.
Additionally, accusations of improper disposal of cigarette butts have drawn criticism, with claims that a staff member had to clean up the area afterward. Images of an employee reportedly kneeling to clean the floor intensified public backlash.
Japan’s revised Health Promotion Act (enforced in April 2020) strictly prohibits smoking in indoor public spaces such as restaurants and offices.

Violations can result in fines of up to:
- ¥300,000 for individuals
- ¥500,000 for facility managers
Given these regulations and similar laws in South Korea critics argue that such behavior is especially concerning for a global figure like RM.
The controversy has gained even more attention because of RM’s long-standing reputation. Known for his thoughtful speeches and responsible image, he has often been praised as a “role model” idol.
His past remarks, including reflections on personal growth and humility, have contributed to his positive public perception making the current allegations feel particularly jarring to fans and observers.
BigHit Music has faced scrutiny over its initial response. Instead of issuing a clear statement or apology, the agency reportedly said: “We are aware of the situation, but since the photos were taken by a paparazzi outlet, we are asking domestic media to refrain from reporting.”
The lack of a definitive stance or clarification has left many questioning the agency’s handling of the issue.

As the situation unfolds, public opinion remains divided: Some criticize the alleged behavior as inappropriate for a global artist, others question the reliability and intent of tabloid reporting.
Without an official confirmation or detailed response, the controversy continues to generate debate across online communities.
