Bong Joon-ho & Colleagues Claim Lee Sun-kyun’s Unfair Death, Will There Be New Act Following ‘Goo Ha-ra Act’?

On the morning of January 12th, a press conference was held to announce the “Demands of cultural artists facing the death of the late actor Lee Sun-kyun” statement. The event was attended by Bong Joon-ho, Yoon Jong-shin, Kim Eui-sung, Choi Deok-moon, Lee Won-tae, Jang Won-seok, and representatives of associations in the Korean film industry.

Witnessing the heartbreaking passing of the late actor Lee Sun-kyun, the Association of Cultural Artists, formed by 29 culture and arts associations, agreed that the incident should not be repeated.

At the press conference, the Association of Cultural Artists mentioned three main things. First, they urge a thorough investigation into the process of how Lee Sun-kyun’s drug investigation was conducted. Second, they request the media to clarify the process of reporting the investigation and delete articles that do not meet the purpose of reporting. Lastly, they demand the revision of current laws to protect the human rights of cultural artists. Actor Kim Eui-sung, director Bong Joon-ho, singer-songwriter Yoon Jong-shin, and director Lee Won-tae took turns presenting their statements on the three matters.

In particular, director Lee Won-tae said, “It is true that the investigative authorities are responsible for the investigative procedures, we believe that the government and the National Assembly should not stay silent on this case, the passing of Lee Sun-kyun. It is necessary to examine whether there are any shortcomings in the current legal laws and regulations related to the confidentiality of criminal cases and human rights protection in investigations, and initiate necessary revisions of the laws.”

The Association of Cultural Artists stated, “We will deliver the statement to the Speaker of the National Assembly for legislative efforts to prevent unjust damages, such as public disclosure of suspicions and unauthorized information leaks”, adding “In light of this incident, we plan to collaborate with various associations to actively work towards the establishment of ‘Lee Sun-kyun Prevention Act’ so that such distressing incidents will not recur in the future”.

Amid the keen attention to the mention of “Lee Sun-kyun Prevention Act”, a law established under the name of another late celebrity is being re-examined.

After former Kara member Goo Ha-ra passed away, Goo Ho-in urged the enactment of “Goo Ha-ra Act”. This proposed legislation is primarily to amend the current Civil Law by adding the provision that restricts inheritance eligibility for parents who have neglected the duty of raising their child. This has sparked extensive social debates and implications, with various opinions being poured out. The inheritance issue that troubled Goo Ha-ra’s brother was addressed under the name “Goo Ha-ra Act” and it has already been implemented.
