BLACKPINK’s Jisoo is a descendant of royalty, said Taiwan media

On December 28, a photo capturing the broadcast screen of CTS, one of Taiwan’s top three terrestrial broadcasters, circulated on various online communities, including FM Korea.

The photo depicted a description of BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, including her full name, Kim Jisoo (金智秀), which seemed fine at first. However, the issue arose in the subsequent content.

After explaining that Jisoo’s family comes from the “Gyeongju Kim” clan, the broadcast confidently added the subtitle “Descendant of the Silla Royalty”.

Jisoo

While it is correct that Jisoo’s family comes from the Gyeongju Kim clan, which is associated with the royal surname of Silla, there are approximately 1.88 million people with the Gyeongju Kim family name as of 2015. Claiming Jisoo as a descendant of the Silla Royalty seems to be an overstretch. Although factually accurate, the statement might feel awkward to the listeners.

Netizens expressed humorous reactions, such as “She does look like a princess,” “Do Taiwanese people know about Silla?” and “Jisoo is impressive for introducing her ancestor to a distant country.”

In the meantime, BLACKPINK, including Jisoo, recently renewed their contract with YG Entertainment for group activities. Regarding solo activities, Jisoo will focus on acting, and is considering her future projects.
