BLACKPINK’s Current Situation in 2023 Amid Uncertain Contract Renewal Status

7 years into their debut, BLACKPINK is still achieving huge success, both as a group and individually

In October 2023, BLACKPINK successfully wrapped up their year-long world tour “Born Pink”. This marked the second world tour in their career and cemented their status as a global icon. However, amidst their career peak, the group and their company, YG Entertainment, are facing a critical issue – contract renewal.

Although BLACKPINK’s 7th debut anniversary was on August 8, 2023, there is still no confirmation regarding their contracts. The latest update has left fans on edge, as reports in Korean media suggest that if the members do not renew their contracts, BLACKPINK may no longer be able to use their group name.

Career Peak 7 Years into Their Debut

Setting contract concerns aside, let’s focus on the incredible achievements of BLACKPINK in 2023. Their world tour “Born Pink”, with its massive scale, rewrote history by becoming the biggest and highest-grossing tour ever by a girl group.

With a total of 66 shows, the tour boasted a staggering revenue of $260 million from 55 of them. BLACKPINK surpassed BTS as the Asian act with the highest-grossing tour in history. They performed in 24 countries, attracting over 2.11 million fans and taking over the stage at iconic venues worldwide, such as MetLife (New York) and Stade de France (Paris).

This year, despite not releasing new music, BLACKPINK managed to secure two awards at the 2023 MTV VMAs: “Group of The Year” and “Best Choreography.” They are the first Asian girl group to achieve these honors in 24 years since TLC in 1999.

Moreover, their headline performance at Coachella, the world’s largest music festival, marked a historic moment. BLACKPINK also headlined BST Hyde Park, where global superstars like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Adele, Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar… once performed.

The most astounding part of BLACKPINK’s achievements is that they managed to accomplish all of this within just one year, despite having entered their 7th year in the industry.

Amazing Solo Achievements

While BLACKPINK as a whole has been shining, the members have also been making waves individually. Jisoo made a successful solo debut in 2023 with “Flower.” Her solo debut album reached #1 in first-week album sales among female soloists.

Following the end of the world tour “Born Pink”, Jennie released her solo song “You & Me” as a gift to the fans. Despite not having any promotions, the song is becoming a hit, and Jennie has once again affirmed her status as “Korea’s No.1 it girl”.

“You & Me” climbed to the #1 spot on Melon Hot 100, reaching #1 on iTunes in 61 countries, securing the 19th spot on the global iTunes top songs chart.

With their current successes, fans eagerly anticipate BLACKPINK’s next milestones. However, the uncertainty surrounding their contract renewal has left fans anxious. But one thing is certain – each BLACKPINK member’s individual fame sets them on paths for continued success, even if they decide not to renew their contracts with YG.
