Together with their comeback, girl group BLACKPINK has been nominated for Group of the Year at the ‘2022 MTV Video Music Awards (MTV VMAs), raising global fans’ expectations.
On August 20th (KST), “2022 MTV VMAs” announced an additional list of nominations for this year’s awards on its official website. In the announcement, BLACKPINK was named as a nominee in the Group of the Year category.
BLACKPINK has just released their pre-release song “Pink Venom” and its music video yesterday (August 19th). It is such an exceptional case since it is still a month ahead of BLACKPINK’s official release of their second full album, which has been set for September 16th, and the name of their album’s title song has not even been revealed yet.
It may be because BLACKPINK’s popularity and musical capability have already been highly evaluated. In particular, BLACKPINK topped iTunes Chart in a total of 70 countries, including the U.S and the U.K, with “Pink Venom”, signaling a new music sensation.
The music video for “Pink Venom” is also receiving explosive attention. “Pink Venom” MV, which recorded 2.5 million streams at the time of its premiere on Youtube, already surpassed 90 million views at the moment, 25 hours after its release.
If the number of views continues to increase with that trend, BLACKPINK is likely to break the record of being the fattest K-pop girl group to reach 100 million views set by themselves before (“How You Like That” – 32 hours).
BLACKPINK is the first K-pop girl group to be invited to the stage of MTV VMAs, which is considered one of the four major pop music awards in the U.S together with the Grammy Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, and the American Music Awards.
Following TLC, Spice Girls, and Fifth Harmony, BLACKPINK is the 4th girl group to appear on MTV VMAs. Considering the great history of MTV VMAs, which began in 1987, BLACKPINK’s global influence and presence shine even more.
BLACKPINK is expected to steal the spotlight as the 4 girls will present a special performance at the awards ceremony, which will be held at the Prudential Center, New Jersey on August 28th (local time).
In addition to the Group of the Year nomination, BLACKPINK also appeared in the Best Metaverse Performance (BLACKPINK) and Best K-pop (LALISA) categories.
