BLACKPINK and their second comeback in 2022: “Shut Down” was well-received but couldn’t surpass the records set by “Pink Venom”

It seems like “Shut Down” is not performing as well as BLACKPINK’s previous release of “Pink Venom”.

At 1 P.M (KST) on September 16th, BLACKPINK released the MV for the title song “Shut Down” and their second full album “BORN PINK”, heating up the whole K-pop industry with their grand comeback. As the most-anticipated comeback of this year, “Shut Down” drew keen attention and positive responses from music fans worldwide and gained many admirable achievements.

However, fans are showing regrets as “Shut Down” seems to be “weaker” than the pre-release title “Pink Venom”.

In particular, the music video for “Shut Down” recorded 49.9 million views and 4.7 million likes on Youtube within its first 24 hours. In fact, this impressive view record is only half of that achieved by “Pink Venom”. Surpassing 90.4 million views, this pre-release single helped BLACKPINK become the female artist with the most viewed MV in the first 24 hours. “Pink Venom” MV is also the No.3 most-viewed music video in the first 24 hours on Youtube’s all-time chart.

In terms of digital music, “Shut Down” also rose to high ranks on all music charts in Korea in the first 24 hours, such as #1 Bugs, #1 Genie, #3 Melon and #3 Flo. However, “Pink Venom” seemed to do better as it strongly dominated the No.1 and No.2 spots on major music charts in Korea. In the global music market, “Shut Down” topped the iTunes Chart in 45 countries but could not break the record of 69 No.1s set by “Pink Venom”.

In fact, many fans pointed out that “Shut Down” was more disadvantageous because it was released at the same time as the full album “BORN PINK”. Since the public began to give attention to other b-side tracks, the title song couldn’t get all the streams that it should have received if it were to be a single release.

In short, BLACKPINK has successfully made a spectacular comeback with the full album “BORN PINK” and set many amazing records not only in Korea but also in overseas markets. Earlier, “BORN PINK” also sold more than 1 million copies within the first day of its physical release, making BLACKPINK the first female artist to do this. It has also proved the huge influence of the major girl group from YG.
