BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga to perform at state dinner with US President Biden?

Girl group BLACKPINK is expected to appear at a joint cultural event during Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit to the US next month.

South Korea and the US are planning a joint cultural event featuring famous singers from both countries during President Yoon Suk Yeol’s state visit to the US, which is scheduled for the end of April. The main performers are likely to be the four-member K-pop girl group BLACKPINK and American pop star Lady Gaga. If successful, the event is expected to attract as much attention as the summit between President Yoon and President Joe Biden.

President Yoon, visiting the US as a state guest for the first time in 12 years, and First Lady Kim Gun Hee are scheduled to attend the state dinner hosted by President Biden and his wife. This event, attended by about 300 well-known Korean and American celebrities from the realms of politics, business, and culture, is the highlight of the state visit schedule.

Last December, when French President Emmanuel Macron visited the US, the appearances of actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus and five-time Grammy Award-winning jazz musician Jon Batiste, among others, made headlines.

It is reported that South Korea and the US are coordinating plans for BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga to perform together at the dinner to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the US-Korea alliance. The two artists have already collaborated on “Sour Candy”, a track from Lady Gaga’s 2020 album “Chromatica”.

A diplomatic source said, “BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga have become fans of each other’s music,” and “discussions are taking place between the White House and the President’s office at the suggestion of First Lady Jill Biden.” President Biden himself expressed interest in K-pop’s popularity during a joint press conference after the 2021 US-Korea summit.

The selection of invitees for the state dinner is primarily the responsibility of the host country, the United States. It has been reported that some cast members from the Korean films “Parasite” and “Minari”, as well as from the drama “Squid Game”, who are familiar to Americans, are also on the US’s list of potential invitees and are being contacted.

Regarding this, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “There has been no information shared from the US side regarding the invitees.”
