“Bitch X Rich”, starring Red Velvet Yeri, disappoints viewers with questionable character building

The audience finds the female lead annoying for her impulsive behaviors.

“Bitch X Rich” has aired four episodes since the beginning of June and some viewers already claimed they dropped the drama. The primry reason is that the story does not match with was being sold previously. Although the series promotes itself to have elements of investigation, until now, the story mostly revolves around high-school conflicts. Most importantly, Hye In, the female lead, is criticized for a questionable character building.

In “Bitch X Rich”, Hye In is a poor girl who went from rags to riches after she witnessed a crime. She became a substitute and got to live in a rich family and enrolled in a top school. Nonetheless, she struggles to blend in and stands out, especially in the eyes of Je Na (Kim Ye Rim), the elite of the elites.

While taking on the motif of a poor girl overcoming obstacle to shine, “Bitch X Rich” seems to go down an strange road with the female lead’s personality. She frequently acted without second thoughts and often played the victim for no obvious reasons. In a viral scene, Hye In called Je Na out for stealing just because Je Na wore the same pair as the one Hye In just lost. She went overboard and physically attacked Je Na. This was the deal breaker for many viewers and led them dropped the drama entirely.

After watching a few episodes, the audience also started having a feeling that Hye In is an unreasonable combination of Suzy from “Anna” and Geum Jan Di from “Boys Over Flowers”. Hye In shares some of their traits, but does not seem to develop in the same directions. Nonetheless, some viewers did find this depiction to be realistic for a dirt-poor, high-school student going through a drastic change. With enough motivations, they believed Hye In will grow in the future.
