T.O.P recently featured in the March cover of the magazine Prestige Hong Kong. Ahead of Big Bang’s first comeback in five years, the idol announced the reason for the group’s long hiatus and future plans in an interview with the media.

TOP described his marijuana controversy, which was in the beginning of the hiatus, as his life’s “worst moment.” TOP said he had suffered from depression since he was young, adding, “I made an extreme attempt (to suicide) five years ago. It was only later that I realized how much hurt and pain I had caused to the people around me, my family, and my fans.” In response, T.O.P tried to quit music, but it was also thanks to music that he eventually overcame the slump. The rapper wrote more than 100 songs in five years. He revealed that the idea of filling the bookshelf with his songs was his driving force.

Referring to the harsh K-pop trainee system, TOP, who recently decided not to renew his contract with YG Entertainment, said, “All trainees are in a harsh system. They are trained to act like robots. It may make them popular, but they can’t see their inner loneliness,” he said. In response, TOP said he wanted to set up a new record company, adding, “I don’t want to be a robot producer. I want to make a real artist and help a real artist. I think positively about creating a completely different group from the Big Bang,” he said.

Big Bang is set to make its first comeback in four years this spring. However, TOP hinted in the interview that this activity was his last as a Big Bang member. TOP said the comeback song includes a message to fans and a message about why Big Bang is off, adding, “To be really honest, I don’t want to think this is my last time (as a Big Bang member). But to be more honest, it may take time until I return as TOP of Big Bang.”
