The actor who plays Spider in “Avatar: The Way of Water” is actually more familiar than you think.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” tells the story of the ruthless threats faced by the family of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) on the planet Pandora, the long journey and battles they must fight to survive, and the scars they endure.
In this sequel to “Avatar”, a new human character named Spider is introduced. Spider was born in Hell’s Gate, an outpost of humans on the planet Pandora. He became an orphan due to the war and is warmly embraced by the Sully family.
Spider loves the jungle of Pandora and enjoys adventures, and is deeply connected with the Navi culture.
The actor who plays Spider is Jack Champion, born in 2004. He took on a minor but important role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
When Scott Lang (Ant-Man) (Paul Rudd) returned from the quantum realm after 5 years, he asked a kid what happened to the neighborhood when half of the world had disappeared due to “The Snap” by Thanos.
The child stared at him like, “Are you asking because you don’t know?” and then left. This kid is Jack Champion.
Jack Champion was 12 years old when the audition for “Avatar: The Way of Water” was in progress. He said he watched “Avatar” (2009) once a day to prepare for the work.
“It was an honor to work with James Cameron for four and a half years. He is a film genius who knows everything from acting guidance to lighting, stunts, and filming. After many years, he has become like a father to me.” – Jack Champion in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Speaking about Spider, Jack Champion said, “I feel like he is a different version of myself in Pandora.”
“Spider always wants a real family. He feels the potential of a true family in the Sullys, but he can’t help but feel a little disconnected because the Sullys are not human like him. So in subsequent situations, he feels conflicted about what a true family means.” – Jack Champion in an interview with Screen Rant.
Meanwhile, Jack Champion is preparing for his next film, “Scream 6”, which is scheduled to be released next March in North America. He has finished filming for “Retribution” starring Liam Neeson, and is also filming “Freaky Tales,” a new film directed by Anna Borden and Ryan Fleck, the directors of “Captain Marvel” (2019).
