Shin Si-ah is a South Korean actress and model. She gained wide recognition for her acting debut as the lead in the film The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, and has since expanded her career into both film and television, including roles in the medical drama Resident Playbook.

Early Life and Education

Shin Si-ah was born on May 12, 1998, in South Korea, as an only child. From her first year of high school, she became passionate about acting after watching the musical Carmen, which inspired her to pursue the performing arts. Over the following two years, she regularly attended multiple theatrical performances each week to deepen her understanding of character and expression.

She later enrolled in the Department of Theater and Film at Hanyang University, where she studied performance and acting, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in theater and film. Her academic training provided foundational skills that would support her transition into professional acting.

Career

Pre-Debut and Early Work (2018–2021)

Shin’s earliest screen appearances were in web content and short films. In 2018, she appeared in the web series My Love Dog Boyfriend, followed by a role in When Two Male Friends Fight Over Me in 2019. That same year, she played a leading role in the short film Prasad, which was screened at the 18th Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival.

Breakthrough with The Witch: Part 2 (2022)

Shin Si-ah’s major breakthrough came in 2022 when she auditioned for and was selected from over 1,400 candidates to star in The Witch: Part 2. The Other One (the sequel to the 2018 hit The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion). She portrayed the mysterious “Girl,” a genetically modified character experiencing the world for the first time. Her performance garnered critical attention and marked her official debut as a lead film actress.

For her work in the film, she earned the Best New Actress Award at the Asia Model Awards and the Rising Star Award at the BIFF Marie Claire Asia Star Awards, along with multiple nominations at major Korean film awards.

Television and Recent Projects (2025–Present)

Following her cinematic success, Shin transitioned into television. In 2025, she appeared in the medical drama Resident Playbook, portraying Pyo Nam-kyung, an obstetrics and gynecology resident, marking her television drama breakthrough role. She tackled the character with preparation that included hospital observations and consultation study to convey authenticity.

  1. For her debut film role in The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, Shin Si-ah faced intense competition. She was selected after beating 1,408 other hopefuls in a rigorous audition process. Remarkably, this was her first-ever acting audition.
  2. She found out she landed the career-making role through a personal phone call from director Park Hoon-jung. When he called and asked what she was doing, she simply replied that she was eating bread.
  3. Her dream of becoming an actress was sparked in her first year of high school after watching the musical Carmen. This led her to immerse herself in the art form, watching an average of four musicals per week for the next two years.
  4. To play the mysterious “Girl” in The Witch 2, who had minimal lines and was experiencing the world for the first time, Shin Si-ah focused on “emptying” herself emotionally, approaching the character like a “newly hatched bird”.
