Anne Hathaway has revealed that she was effectively blind in her left eye for nearly a decade due to an early cataract condition.
The actress made the candid confession during an appearance on The New York Times podcast Popcast, which was released on April 23 local time.
During the interview, Hathaway cautiously said, “This may be too much information,” before explaining, “For the last 10 years, my left eye was legally blind.”
She shared that she developed early cataracts in her early 30s and spent most of that decade living with severe vision loss in one eye. Hathaway admitted the condition caused her intense stress throughout that period.

Cataracts are a medical condition in which the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurry vision and worsening eyesight over time.
Hathaway further explained that she did not fully realize how serious the condition had become until she underwent surgery at the age of 40.
She said, “It wasn’t until after the surgery that I truly understood how severe my eye condition was.” The actress added that she had not realized how much pressure the illness had been placing on her visual nervous system.
Fortunately, Hathaway has now regained her eyesight. Reflecting on her recovery, she shared, “After the surgery, things calmed down significantly.”

She continued, “Being able to open my eyes and see the world every single day truly feels like a miracle. Two generations ago, people may not have even had access to this kind of treatment, so I’m deeply grateful for that miracle.”
Hathaway first debuted in the 1999 drama Get Real before gaining worldwide recognition through the 2001 film The Princess Diaries.
Since then, she has starred in numerous hit productions including The Devil Wears Prada, Alice in Wonderland, The Dark Knight Rises, Les Misérables, Interstellar, The Intern, and Ocean’s 8. Most recently, she returned to audiences last month with The Devil Wears Prada 2.
