Andy Lau is a legendary figure in Asian entertainment and one of the iconic “Four Heavenly Kings” of Hong Kong, achieving massive success in both music and film. Behind his glamorous career, however, lies a deeply private love story with his wife, Carol Chu. The couple met through mutual friends in the late 1980s and quietly registered their marriage in Las Vegas in 2008. Determined to protect Carol Chu, Andy Lau chose to keep his marriage secret for years a decision that later sparked controversy and earned him the harsh nickname “the Heavenly King who lied” when the truth was revealed.

On January 28, veteran entertainment figure Tiffany Chen Lan revealed just how difficult Carol Chu’s life was while dating Andy Lau at the height of his fame. Despite being a wealthy heiress, Carol Chu had to accept life as a girlfriend in the shadows. Whenever the couple wanted to meet, she reportedly had to hide under blankets on the floor of a car to enter or leave Andy Lau’s home without being seen. In extreme situations, she even crawled under cars to avoid the lenses of obsessive fans who were secretly staking out his residence.
“She was born a rich heiress, but for love, she was willing to humble herself and ignore her status,” Tiffany Chen said. “At the peak of Andy Lau’s popularity, the fanaticism of his fans was terrifying. Some hid under hotel beds, smashed restaurant windows, or even threatened suicide just to see him. I myself was once threatened with a stick by his fans, who demanded I hand him over. I can’t imagine what would have happened if Carol Chu had been exposed as his girlfriend back then. That’s why they had no choice but to date in such an exhausting, secretive way.”

According to On.cc, Carol Chu was born in 1966 and was once the third runner-up in a Malaysian beauty pageant. She briefly worked as a photo model before leaving the entertainment industry altogether. Her family is among the wealthiest and most influential in Malaysia, owning the country’s fifth-largest conglomerate with annual revenue estimated at 20 billion yuan. Her father was a major businessman in real estate, hospitality, and aviation in Penang, while her uncle ranks among Malaysia’s top 10 richest individuals, with business interests spanning hotels, insurance, tourism, and television.
Carol Chu is also connected to other prominent figures, including billionaire Zhu Zhaoxiang, the husband of actress Hu Jing. With such a formidable background, Carol Chu still chose to step back and remain the woman behind Andy Lau.

It wasn’t until 2009 after more than a decade of secrecy that Andy Lau was first photographed holding Carol Chu’s hand in public, when she returned to Malaysia to mourn her father. Even today, despite being married to one of the biggest stars in Chinese entertainment, Carol Chu has never had a public wedding, nor a complete family photo openly shared with her husband. When she and her daughter appear in public, they often wear masks to cover their faces.
