“All Of Us Are Dead” director Lee Jae-kyu: “I apologize for exaggeratingly describing the sexual assault scene”
Director Lee Jae-kyu of the popular Netflix series “All Of Us Are Dead” apologized for the provocative production.
Director Lee Jae-kyu of Netflix’s original series “All Of Us Are Dead” appeared in a video interview with reporters on Feb 7th.
“All Of Us Are Dead” is gaining much popularity, ranking No. 1 in the worldwide Netflix rankings. However, controversy also arose because of a scene in the drama that clearly depicted a female student suffering from sexual violence.
Director Lee Jae-kyu was also aware of the negative response claiming that “Isn’t that scene sexually targeting minors?”
Director Lee Jae-kyu explained, “There are many tragedies in our society, and we simply show them. We definitely have no intention of stimulating such behaviors and attracting the audience by showing such scenes.”
He said, “The audience might know if they watch Eun-ji’s story later on in the series, she is so afraid of the footage of her suffering self being exposed that she would rather risk her life to get rid of it. I wanted the audience to be able to feel how cruel the perpetrators’ actions were,” he said, expressing his directing intention.
Director Lee Jae-kyu added, “If there are people who feel that it was exaggeratingly delivered or are uncomfortable, I am sorry as a director and producer.”
Director Lee Jae-kyu also mentioned the childbirth scene in the bathroom, which also caused controversy over provocative directing.
Director Lee Jae-kyu said, “Hee-soo is a character that tells the story of young single mothers who appear in reality as well. I thought Hee-soo’s return with a sense of responsibility to protect her child after abandoning them was in line with the overall theme,” he said, explaining his view.
He said, “It may be unbearable when webtoons are remade into live actions. I thought people should be able to enjoy the drama easily and interestingly. So there are things that have been refined to some extent. There is a more violent aspect in the original work. I think it is also a virtue of the original work,” he said, stressing that the level of expression of “All Of Us Are Dead” has been more refined than that of the original webtoon.
Meanwhile, “All Of Us Are Dead,” which is rewriting a new history of K-Zombie, is the story about students who are isolated and waiting for rescue at a school where the zombie apocalypse began.
“All Of Us Are Dead” shows not only students, but also various human groups and society, including the police, firefighters, soldiers, and politicians, and how they face the zombie apocalypse situation outside the school.
