Ahn Hyo-seop Reflects on ‘A Time Called You,’ What He Would Do if He Could Time Slip, and More

“I hope to be someone who continues to seek change and learn in the future,” said Ahn Hyo-seop

Ahn Hyo-seop recently had an interview following the release of the Netflix original series “A Time Called You”.

The mystery romance drama follows Jun-hee (Jeon Yeo-been), who had been longing for her boyfriend who passed away a year ago, as she time-slips to 1998 and meets Shi-hun (Ahn Hyo-seop), who looks identical to her late boyfriend Yeon-jun (Ahn Hyo-seop), and his best friend In-gyu (Kang Hoon).

Ahn Hyo-seop received praise for his dual role, portraying Yeon-jun, Jun-hee’s boyfriend who died a year ago, and Shi-hun, a high school student from 1998 who looks just like Yeon-jun.

“A Time Called You,” a remake of the popular Taiwanese youth romance drama “Someday or One Day”, has been creating buzz even before its release. Thanks to the popularity of the original drama, “A Time Called You” has ranked 8th globally and 1st domestically in Netflix TV series rankings according to FlixPatrol.

When asked if he had looked for reactions to the drama, Ahn Hyo-seop said, “I usually don’t search for reactions. Occasionally, when I’m drinking, I might take a peek. At the beginning of my acting career, I felt embarrassed to monitor my own acting. I watched it with my phone tilted to the side. That’s a bit of TMI.”

Ahn Hyo-seop said about taking on a dual role, “It was as a role that required a lot of imagination. Expressing how my character would look and feel when I jumped to that particular time was quite challenging.”

He continued, “It’s also about eye acting. I think the only thing a person can’t change on their face is their gaze. I believe that a person’s eyes convey a lot. It’s something you really have to feel and immerse yourself in, so it was the most difficult part.”

When it comes to time-slipping across space and time, Ahn Hyo-seop expressed his desire to go to the future. He said, “During the press conference, I said I wanted to go back to when my parents and I were the same age, but why not go to the future? I want to experience my 40s and 50s.”

He added, “Because I am very satisfied with each day I live. I think I’m living each day to the fullest, so I have no regrets. Living like this, I wonder if I will become the person I want to be as time goes on.”

When asked if he has a vision for his 40s and 50s, he jokingly added, “I hope I won’t have a beard.” He further explained, “Rather than having a specific appearance, I hope to remain as I am now. Instead of having a mindset of ‘don’t lose your initial enthusiasm,’ I am someone who acknowledges and embraces change. I hope to be someone who seeks change and continues to learn, someone with depth.”

Ahn Hyo-seop also reflected on how he’s changing as he gets older, “I’ve noticed that as I get older, I’m losing my attachment to material things. When I was young, I thought having a nice car, a good TV, and a nice house was great and grew up wanting those things. But now, I feel like they are gradually disappearing. I want to become someone who is not tied to any particular thing and can take more time to reflect on my own life, to reflect on myself.”
