Ahead Of NewJeans’ World Tour, Korean Media Are Worried Its Music Is Too ‘Easy Listening’ For Concerts

On February 10, Korean media outlet TenAsia posted an article discussing NewJeans’ ability to hold concerts. According to this article, artists expand their presence at home and abroad and further bring significant profits. However, holding a world tour or solo concert is not an activity that can be done just because they want to do it. It is only possible for groups that have a number of albums and songs, a solid fan base, and significant popularity. Most importantly, the group should have the power to lead a concert with ‘running time’ of about two hours. This brings up a question, “Is NewJeans’ music attractive enough for such a performance?”

With the release of “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” “Ditto,” “Super Shy” and “OMG,” New Jeans has been receiving a lot of love. However, despite its popularity, it remains reluctant when it comes to world tours. Since their debut, ADOR and NewJeans have released various single albums. This means that they don’t have enough songs to host a concert.

TenAsia points out that even though performance is not NewJeans’ weakness, it is also not their strength. It is questionable whether they have the power to overwhelm audiences with powerful sounds in a concert. Industry insiders point out that most of NewJeans’ flagship songs do not fit well with performance music. Idol music is not a genre in which hundreds or thousands of people enjoy a calm atmosphere. Idol concerts are spaces where tens of thousands of people on average cheer together. For this reason, “Easy Listening” music is not enough.

The article claims that NewJeans is expected to make a world tour in the second half of this year. Therefore, the music to be released by the in the first half of this year before the world tour is important. If the song is easy to listen to, the group cannot abolish its limit to become a performance-type idol, and if it is strong music, NewJeans can lose its concept. This is where the concerns of NewJeans’ “mother,” Min Hee-jin, deepen.
