aespa’s Ningning Resolves Live Controversy with Cover of Park Hwayobi’s “Something Like That”

Main vocalist Ningning put an end to aespa’s live controversy in the past through a band live performance.

YouTube channel “It’s Live” released a video featuring aespa Ningning’s Solo Band Live of the song “Something Like That” on May 28th.

In the released video, Ningning covered Park Hwayobi’s “Something Like That” to the accompaniment of a band. “Something Like That” is one of Park Hwayobi’s most famous songs released in 2000, which expresses heartfelt emotions about a past lover.

Ningning showcased a traditional ballad, which is completely different from aespa’s songs released so far. Ningning’s unique, clear, and pure vocal tone, accurate pronunciation, and stable high notes earn praise.

After finishing the song, Ningning explained, “This song is a classic. I really like Korean songs, and I have been listening to this song for a long time. I wanted to sing it for my fans. Finally, I got the chance to do it.”

Ningning added, “It feels a bit empty without the other members, but I’ll do my best. It’s a difficult and sentimental song, so I’m not sure if I did well, but please watch it beautifully.

After the video was released, aespa member Karina shared the video on her Instagram story and expressed her pride, saying, “You did so well, Ning pride.”

Netizens also showed enthusiastic reactions, saying, “It’s a difficult song to cover, but she sings it really well,” “Ningning has been in Korea for already seven years and has worked so hard to debut,” “Her vocals are soft, giving a different vibe from aespa’s songs,” “Let’s remember that Ningning is a member of SM Rookies who survived for six years until the end,” “Ningning, you worked hard,” and more.

After their debut in November 2020, aespa was once plagued by rumors that they are not good at live performances due to lip syncing controversies.

However, with the release of their third mini-album, “MY WORLD,” on May 8th, and their solid live performances during various music shows with the title track “Spicy,” aespa has received praise for their relaxed stage presence even in demanding encore stages.
