Actors who are also doing well as directors… Lee Jung-jae, Son Seok-gu, Moon Geun-young and Koo Kyo-hwan

Many actors are known for their “two job” profiles. Many people were surprised to find out about the amazing directing skills of famous actors, such as Lee Jung-jae and Koo Kyo-hwan.

Movie fans are enthusiastic about the transformation of several leading actors in the Korean film industry as directors. They commented, “I didn’t know they can also do this”, “Please keep writing more scenarios”, “They’re also amazing directors”, etc. These are compliments for Lee Jung-jae, Son Seok-gu, Moon Geun-young and Koo Kyo-hwan, who have gained recognition for both their acting and directing skills.

Lee Jung-jae, who became a world star with the success of Netflix’s “Squid Game” last year, has proved his outstanding directing skills through his movie “Hunt”. Released on August 10th, “Hunt” tells about agents of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) doubting each other in order to find out the spy hiding inside their agency. Lee Jung-jae was in charge of three roles in the production process of “Hunt”, including acting as NIS Foreign Unit Chief Park Pyeong-ho, writing the script, and directing the movie. In particular, the well-written story of “Hunt” received favorable reviews from the public as well as critics, which is unbelievable for a debut work of an actor as a director.

“10 million movie” actor Son Seok-gu also has a director’s business card. Son Seok-gu took charge of directing one movie in  OTT Watcha’s short film project “Unframed”. Directed by Son Seok-gu, “Rebroadcast” is a road movie that depicts the troublesome and affectionate day of a nephew accompanying his aunt to a wedding.

Seon Seok-gu shared, “I expanded the scenario by imagining the relationship between people I happened to see at a wedding”. He revealed that he liked writing and had always been wondering how his own writing would be when it is turned into a movie. Son Seok-gu also said, “Becoming an actor was the best choice in my 20s, and the best choice I made in my 30s was to produce ‘Rebroadcast’ for ‘Unframed’ project”, showing his affection.

Actress Moon Geun-young is also known for her second job as a director. Moon Geun-young sent three short films to the 26th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and made her directing debut.

Moon Geun-young’s three works each had a short running time of 9 to 15 minutes, and all of them were expressed with the actor’s expression, gesture, light, and music without any lines. “Abyss” contains the story of Moon Geun-young’s own,  “The Stage” and “Be In My Dream” contain the stories of actors Jeong Pyeong and Ahn Seung-kyun, respectively. Taking advantage of the nature of short films, Moon Geun-young took charge of the screenplay and listened to the stories of the two actors and wrote the scripts.

Koo Kyo-hwan has been known as an idol in the independent film industry for more than a decade. In the movie “Jane,” his name gradually became known thanks to the transgender character Jane. Since then, he has emerged as a trend through “Escape From Mogadishu” and Netflix’s original “D.P.” starting with director Yeon Sang-ho’s “Peninsula.”

Koo has short films that he worked with his nine-year-older lover Lee Ok-seop. These short films can be found on the YouTube channel “2X9HD Koo Kyo-hwan X Lee Ok-seop.” Not long ago, his work “A Glimpse At Lee Hyo-ri” with Lee Hyo-ri recorded 580,000 views.
