A woman who ran around the scene of the Itaewon disaster to reposition the deceased’s hands told her story

While the public is still shocked by the Itaewon disaster, the survivors shared their shocking story of the scene.

On Nov 1st, MBC’s “PD Notebook” hosted a special broadcast about the Itaewon disaster.

A woman, who was in the alleyway in Itaewon at the time of the disaster, vividly remembered that day.

“People around me were really having a hard time,” A said. “I felt like I was going to die. I thought this was really not right, so I called 112 and asked them to prevent people from entering,” she said. “When I called, there might have been a scream at the police call center.”

She managed to escape from the scene of the disaster, but the reality that A faced after was so terrible. Citizens who were walking together with her on the street not long ago were unconscious and collapsed on the street.

In such a situation, all A could do was gather and repositioned the hands of the bodies neatly.

A said, “The medical staff told me to put their hands together before the bodies harden,” and added, “If they were left as they were, it would be hard for them to go into the coffin later.”

“I thought I had to do something from then on, so I ran around repositioning hands (of the bodies),” she said, recalling the time, “They have passed away, but at least it would be easier for them.”

Meanwhile, on Oct 30th, the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association recommended that the act of distributing on-site images and footage at the time of the accident should be stopped without filtration.

In addition, psychiatrists stressed, “People who witnessed the accident can suffer from PTSD,” adding, “If you have a stress reaction, we recommend you to consult an expert (such as a crisis counseling call center).”
