As MAMAMOO Hwasa is criticized for “provocative performance”, netizens are bringing up another singer who was banned for the same reason.
In July, Korean media outlets reported the Korean Parents Association filed a legal complaint against Hwasa for her “provocative performance” at Sungkyunkwan University Festival back on May 12th. The Seongdong Police Station in Seoul has received the complaint and subsequently launched an investigation.
Hwasa’s incident quickly drew attention from netizens on various online communities. In particular, many started to recall a similar story, where another female singer was banned from TV for being too “erotic”.
The female singer in question is none other than the “Korean Madonna” Kim Wan Sun, who was a popular pop singer/songwriter in Korea in the mid-1980s to the early 1990s.
This story was actually told in an episode of “Dancing Queens on the Road”, which features Kim Wan Sun, Uhm Jung Hwa, Lee Hyori, BoA, and Hwasa, who travel across Korea together to perform and interact with fans.
In particular, Kim Wan Sun shared her experience, which happened several decades ago, in the 4th episode, which aired in mid-June. According to the female singer, she only achieved 1st place on a music program with her 5th album, surprising the other members, as this means Kim Wan Sun’s hit songs like “Dance in the Rhythms” and “Tonight” never won.
Uhm Jung Hwa, who debuted around the same time as Kim Wan Sun, explained that in the 1980s, dance music was not highly regarded, and the focus was mainly on ballads or rock. In fact, the term “dance music” didn’t even exist in the public’s vocabulary at that time, said Kim Won Sun.
At the time, even the word “sexy” was not commonly used in South Korea, and so, Kim Wan Sun, who adopted a sexy image, was often viewed as an “erotic” singer.
Hearing this, Uhm Jung Hwa agreed with her senior’s statement, noting that Kim’s debut caused a shock in the entertainment industry due to her overwhelming sexiness.
Interestingly, the reason Kim Wan Sun was called “erotic” did not come from her attire, but from the songs she performed. She ended up being banned from TV appearances for 6 months as broadcasting stations deemed her performance to be “too provocative”.
Upon hearing this, the cast of “Dancing Queens on the Road” were shocked, calling the ban “unreasonable”. Meanwhile, Uhm Jung Hwa burst into laughter, saying, “She was too hot for TV.”
Currently, after 37 years in the industry, Kim Wan Sun is considered a legend and remains beloved by many generations of idols in the Korean entertainment industry. Even now, she maintains a youthful and sexy image.
