SBS’s Entertainment Department faces a crisis due to the controversy over Yoo Jae Suk’s Daesang
SBS didn’t want to be criticized for not creating new content, so they decided to give the 2022 Entertainment Awards Daesang to the National MC but ended up facing a bigger problem.
Since the Entertainment Awards is held annually, awards, including Daesang (Grand Prize), should be given every year even when there are no successful and outstanding entertainment programs or entertainers. The seats at the 2022 Entertainment Awards ceremony were occupied by the same cast of existing programs, and there was no difference from last year’s awards ceremony.
Since the candidates for Daesang had already been expected, SBS tried to create a variety of new awards to give all entertainers, but viewers found it neither fun nor touching. The entertainers also could not tolerate it. At the 2022 SBS Entertainment Awards, some of them made bold remarks. Lee Kyung Kyu’s acceptance speech described the situation of SBS Entertainment Awards the best. Winning Best Character for “Golf Battle: Birdie Buddies”, Lee Kyung Kyu said, “I’ve never heard of such a strange award like this before. I don’t know what kind of award it is, but I’m glad to know the rating rose slightly every time I get angry”.
Shin Dong Yeop, who was also a Daesang candidate, mentioned Kim Gu Ra, who refused his Daesang nomination and criticized Entertainment Awards Daesang, and honestly said, “I also want to get angry and enjoy the happy moment of not being nominated for Daesang”.
Yoo Jae Suk was honored with Daesang at this year’s awards ceremony. However, when receiving the trophy he apologized to “Running Man “Ji Suk Jin and pointed out that Ji Suk Jin was neglected. No one knows the criteria for the winner selection, but even Yoo Jae Suk expected Ji Suk Jin to win Daesang. Therefore, there was definitely a problem with this year’s SBS Entertainment Awards.
The reason no one disagreed when SBS gave Daesang to Yoo Jae Suk is that he has been called “National MC” for decades. He has established a solid position and a good impression on the public, so his Daesang is no longer surprising. SBS, which did not have any excellent program this year, might have judged that it would be easier and safer for them to give Daesang to Yoo Jae Suk instead of choosing between those from programs with poor performances.
Ji Suk Jin eventually left the awards ceremony empty-handed while other Daesang candidates all received an award. This made viewers furious and raise questions about the reason Ji Suk Jin, who has been so well-loved as the big brother of “Running Man”, did not even get an award with a strange name, let alone the Daesang.
SBS Entertainment Department is no longer producing fresh and new programs. Apart from long-living programs with strong supporters and solid viewers, the rest were made with the same style. If a program is a little popular, SBS would make Season 2 with the same concept. For example, “Same Bed, Different Dreams”, “Master in the House”, “Kick A Goal”, and “Dolsing Fourmen”.
Being stable was the best option for programs on terrestrial channels in the past, but not now. It is because channels have diversified, and even if viewers don’t watch TV, there’s YouTube and OTT. Many of this year’s popular entertainment shows actually came from OTT and cable.
At this point, SBS should not create more new awards but worry about the current status of its low-performing programs. Since the entertainer has pointed out the problem, SBS can possibly overcome this crisis and survive if it changes.
