According to local reports, the incident took place in late December 2024 after Taiwanese singer Kui spent several hours drinking alcohol.

Authorities said the singer consumed alcohol from around midnight until approximately 4 a.m. before getting behind the wheel and driving to a friend’s residence.

At approximately 4:16 a.m., Kui’s vehicle struck two taxi drivers, identified by their surnames Lee and Chen. Rather than stopping at the scene, he allegedly continued driving, ran a red light, and ignored warnings from a bystander who reportedly shouted that he had hit someone.

While Chen survived the collision, Lee suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries on January 3, turning the case into a fatal traffic incident.

Following the accident, Kui was questioned by authorities on December 29. However, he continued with previously scheduled activities, including multiple year-end performances.

The singer later shared photos from one of those events on Instagram, thanking fans for their support throughout 2024 and expressing optimism for the coming year.

In the post, Kui wrote that he had completed three performances on New Year’s Eve and hoped that he and his fans would become “better together” in 2025.

The update later drew criticism from some netizens after details of the fatal crash became widely known.

As the investigation progressed, authorities reportedly uncovered evidence that raised further questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

When Kui’s vehicle was seized from a repair shop, investigators found a spiderweb-shaped crack on the right side of the front windshield that was believed to be connected to the collision.

Reports also stated that the vehicle’s dashcam memory card was missing at the time of the seizure, adding another point of scrutiny during the investigation.

Court documents reportedly revealed that Kui had previously received a deferred prosecution related to a drunk driving offense.

Because of his prior history, the court considered him a repeat offender when determining the sentence.

Judges ultimately sentenced the singer to:

  • Eight years in prison for causing death while driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Three years and six months for fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in death or injury

Under Taiwan’s sentencing rules, the combined punishment was set at 10 years in prison.

The court reportedly issued its ruling in late April 2026.

More recently, authorities added an additional restriction prohibiting Kui from leaving the country for the next eight months while legal proceedings remain ongoing.

The travel ban will remain in place as the singer retains the right to appeal the verdict.

The case has continued to generate public discussion due to the combination of factors involved, including the fatal nature of the crash, allegations that the singer fled the scene, and reports that he continued performing shortly after the incident.
