Chinese television star Sun Li, often referred to as the “Queen of Ratings,” has sparked concern among fans after revealing an unexpected health issue she experienced while filming her latest drama.
On May 27, the phrase “Sun Li suffered a ruptured eye blood vessel” became a trending topic on Chinese social media after the actress shared details about an incident that occurred during the production of her new drama Survive.
According to Sun Li, she had just completed what she described as the most emotionally intense and physically demanding scene in the entire series. The sequence required her character to continuously shout, express anger, and display powerful emotions at a high intensity. Compounding the challenge, the weather was extremely hot, leaving both Sun Li and her fellow cast members feeling overheated, nauseous, and close to suffering from heat exhaustion.
After filming wrapped, the actress drank a bottle of herbal medicine to ease her discomfort. However, when she woke up the next morning, she discovered a noticeable red patch in her eye caused by a ruptured blood vessel.

The drama is currently being filmed in Xiamen, Fujian Province, where daytime temperatures have reportedly ranged between 36°C and 38°C. This is not the first time Sun Li has experienced an eye-related injury. In September 2025, she suffered a subconjunctival hemorrhage after being struck in her left eye by a badminton shuttlecock traveling at high speed.
Medical specialists believe Sun Li’s condition is most likely a subconjunctival hemorrhage, a common condition that occurs when tiny blood vessels beneath the eye’s conjunctiva rupture, creating a bright red patch on the white part of the eye.
In most cases, the condition does not affect vision and typically resolves on its own within one to three weeks. Ophthalmologists explain that intense emotional stress can trigger sudden spikes in blood pressure, increasing pressure on small blood vessels and potentially causing them to burst.
Doctors also note that severe coughing, repeated sneezing, vomiting, heavy lifting, or excessive straining can produce similar symptoms.

Regarding the extreme weather conditions, experts emphasized that high temperatures are not usually the direct cause of ruptured eye blood vessels. In fact, cold environments that cause blood vessels to constrict sharply may pose a greater risk of vascular injury.
In Sun Li’s case, specialists believe the intense heat likely contributed to physical fatigue and heat stress. However, the primary factor was probably the combination of emotional strain and physical exertion required during filming.
Medical professionals further advised that most cases of subconjunctival hemorrhage are harmless and resolve naturally without treatment. Nevertheless, individuals should seek medical attention if the condition recurs frequently or is accompanied by symptoms such as eye pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, or unusual bleeding elsewhere in the body.
Doctors warn that recurring episodes could indicate underlying health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, or blood-clotting disorders, which require proper medical evaluation.
