MBC has reportedly decided to remove controversial scenes from episode 11 of the drama Perfect Crown following intense criticism over alleged historical distortion.
According to Hankook Ilbo on May 21, MBC is currently editing the ending scene of episode 11, which became the center of online backlash after its broadcast. An MBC representative reportedly confirmed that the controversial ending sequence would be deleted entirely from VOD and OTT streaming versions, although the update may take several days to fully apply across platforms.

The scene in question featured a royal enthronement ceremony where officials shouted “Cheonse” (“Long live for a thousand years”). The phrase immediately sparked controversy because it was historically associated with the tributary-state system during Korea’s Joseon era.
Critics argued that using the expression in a modern fictional setting implied an outdated subordinate relationship with China, making it inappropriate for a contemporary Korean backdrop. The issue quickly escalated online, with many viewers accusing the drama of presenting historically problematic symbolism.
Another major point of criticism involved the ceremonial crown worn by Byeon Woo Seok’s character Lee An Daegun during the coronation scene. Some viewers claimed the crown design represented attire traditionally associated with rulers of tributary states, further fueling accusations that the series indirectly portrayed Korea as subordinate to China.

Before deciding to remove the scene entirely, MBC had already attempted partial edits. On May 20, revised versions featuring modified subtitles and altered audio were uploaded to streaming services including Disney+ Korea and Wavve.
However, as criticism continued growing, the production team reportedly chose to completely delete the disputed sequence from future streaming releases.
Director Park Joon Hwa had previously hinted at the possibility during an interview, stating cautiously that the “Cheonse” scene likely needed to be removed despite its importance to the story.
Even with the latest editing decision, concerns remain over whether the controversy can be fully resolved, as discussions about historical interpretation and cultural sensitivity continue spreading rapidly across Korean online communities.
