Despite facing major controversy surrounding one of its lead actors, Netflix’s new Korean original series The Wonderfools has proven the power of strong storytelling and production quality, rapidly capturing viewers around the world.

Released on May 15, The Wonderfools is a supernatural comedy-adventure drama set in 1999 during the final days of the century. The story follows a group of unlikely neighborhood outcasts who suddenly gain superpowers and must join forces to protect the world from dangerous villains threatening peace.

The series attracted massive anticipation even before its premiere thanks to director Yoo In Sik, who previously led hit productions including Extraordinary Attorney Woo and the Dr. Romantic series. Known for creating memorable characters and emotionally rich narratives across multiple genres, Yoo’s latest project generated significant buzz from the start.

The drama also reunited several stars from Extraordinary Attorney Woo, including Park Eun Bin, Choi Dae Hoon, and Im Seong Jae, further raising expectations among viewers.

However, ahead of the drama’s release, the production was suddenly hit with a major risk after lead actor Cha Eunwoo became embroiled in allegations involving a massive tax reassessment reportedly worth billions of won. Concerns quickly spread online over whether the controversy surrounding the actor — who is currently serving in the military band during his mandatory military service — could negatively impact the drama’s reception.

During the production press conference, director Yoo In Sik directly addressed the issue, emphasizing that the production team prioritized the quality of the series and the hard work of the cast and staff above all else. He also stated that Cha Eunwoo’s scenes would remain untouched without edits.

That decision appears to have paid off. According to global OTT ranking platform FlixPatrol, The Wonderfools entered Netflix’s Top 10 rankings in 28 countries/regions immediately after release, including South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brazil.

In Korea, the drama debuted at No.3 on its first day before climbing to No.2 within two days. By its third day, the series officially claimed the No.1 spot on Netflix Korea.

Viewers especially praised Park Eun Bin’s detailed emotional performance alongside Cha Eunwoo’s dramatic character transformation, which delivered unexpectedly strong chemistry onscreen.

Another major reason behind the drama’s success is its compelling villains, who have significantly elevated the tension and immersion of the story.

Among them, actress Jung Yi Seo has drawn particular attention for her chilling portrayal of the villain Seok Ju Ran.

In the series, Seok Ju Ran is one of three “Wunderkind” subjects who gained supernatural abilities after being experimented on by the mysterious project leader Ha Won Do. Having lost her hearing due to traumatic conditions in a welfare facility during childhood, the character possesses the terrifying ability to disable other people’s hearing and manipulate them like puppets.

Jung Yi Seo received praise for portraying the character with eerie restraint, using cold expressions, intense eye contact, and subtle breathing rather than exaggerated action. Her calm but haunting performance has become one of the show’s standout elements.

Critics and viewers have also praised the actress for convincingly portraying Seok Ju Ran’s emotional conflict — a woman who willingly embraces becoming a monster in order to protect her younger sibling. The layered performance has led many viewers to call the role her “career-defining character.”

Actor Bae Na Ra has also earned attention for his charismatic villain performance as Kim Pal Ho. Known for building strong acting foundations through both musicals and television projects, Bae Na Ra delivered intense energy throughout the series.

His cold gaze and commanding presence amplified the character’s threatening aura, while his supernatural confrontations with Cha Eunwoo’s character Lee Un Jeong created some of the drama’s most suspenseful scenes.

Bae Na Ra additionally impressed viewers with emotionally detailed acting that explored his character’s psychological pain and complicated relationship with his father. Combined with high-level action scenes and explosive physical performances, the actor once again expanded his acting range following previous works including D.P. Season 2 and Weak Hero Class 2.

Despite major obstacles including controversy surrounding its lead actor and military enlistment issues, The Wonderfools has successfully transformed crisis into opportunity through a strong script, Yoo In Sik’s polished directing, and powerful performances from both the lead and supporting cast.

As praise for the drama’s memorable scenes and acting performances continues spreading across online communities, many believe the global success of The Wonderfools is only just beginning.
