Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Perfect Crown, actor Lee Jae Won has officially canceled his post-drama interview.
On May 18, Lee Jae Won’s agency Studio Uhoo told local media outlet Maeil Business Star Today that the actor would no longer proceed with the interview originally scheduled for May 21.
The agency stated, “We are taking the current public opinion and situation surrounding the drama very seriously.”
In the drama, Lee Jae Won played Seong Tae Ju, the eldest son of Castle Group and the older brother of Seong Hui Ju, portrayed by IU.
The agency further explained, “Under these circumstances, we felt that having the actor conduct an individual interview could place a burden on the drama as a whole and its viewers. The actor himself is also viewing the situation with a heavy heart as part of the production. After considering various factors, we concluded that it would be difficult to proceed with the interview.”
MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown, which aired its final episode on May 16, told the story of a romance that transcends social status in a fictional constitutional monarchy version of modern-day Korea. The series followed wealthy commoner Seong Hui Ju, played by IU, and Grand Prince Ian, portrayed by Byeon Woo Seok.
Despite the controversy, the drama achieved strong ratings throughout its run. The final episode recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 13.8% according to Nielsen Korea, marking the show’s highest rating and placing it third among MBC’s highest-rated Friday-Saturday dramas.
However, despite its popularity and strong buzz, the series continuously faced criticism over historical inaccuracies and acting performances during its broadcast. Some scenes even sparked accusations of historical distortion, leading to ongoing debate even after the drama concluded.
Typically, when a drama finishes with high ratings, actors participate in interviews to share behind-the-scenes stories, discuss the project, and answer fans’ questions. However, amid the continuing controversy, Lee Jae Won decided to take a cautious approach by canceling the individual interview that had already been confirmed earlier this month.
Industry insiders believe the decision was likely made to avoid placing further attention on individual cast members while backlash surrounding the drama continues to intensify after its finale.
