On May 12, IU’s YouTube channel 이지금 uploaded a new video titled “We’re Already Crying Because The Finale Is Coming… | The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife Behind Story.”
The clip featured filming moments from The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife, including an emotional scene where IU’s character Seong Hee Joo desperately begs her father for help after her contract marriage secret is exposed.
In the scene, Hee Joo eventually falls to her knees in tears while pleading emotionally.
After filming ended, IU reflected deeply on the character’s emotional state and unexpectedly revealed her own philosophy about love.
She said: “She completely threw away her pride in front of love. Wan (played by Byeon Woo Seok) really needs to recognize this kind of love.”
However, IU quickly paused and added thoughtfully: “But the fact that she wants her love to be acknowledged probably means she still doesn’t love enough. Love isn’t something that should ask to be recognized.”
The production staff then asked whether that perspective belonged to IU personally or to her drama character Hee Joo.
IU answered honestly: “That’s IU’s philosophy.”
She continued by explaining that Hee Joo likely has not experienced enough love in life to even form her own philosophy yet.
The actress also analyzed her character’s complicated emotions toward her father, explaining that kneeling before him felt even more humiliating and difficult than doing so in front of the entire nation.
“Because of her complicated relationship with her father, kneeling before him probably felt more painful than kneeling publicly. She was desperately grabbing onto the last straw.”
IU further revealed that while filming, she herself still did not know exactly how the relationship between Hee Joo and Lee An Daegun — played by Byeon Woo Seok — would develop later in the story.
“Even on the day we filmed this scene, I had only just read Episode 10’s script, so I honestly didn’t know what would happen next,” she shared.
She added that she has been approaching the drama naturally without trying to over-control her acting choices.
“I’m acting while discovering the story as it unfolds, so I’m trying to just go with the flow. Please continue supporting us.”
IU’s comments quickly spread online, with many fans praising her mature and reflective perspective on relationships.
The singer-actress has been publicly dating Lee Jong Suk since December 2022, and the couple remains one of Korea’s most beloved celebrity pairings.
Meanwhile, The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife continues airing on MBC every Friday and Saturday evening.
