On March 19, a press call for the play Orphans was held at TOM 1 Theater in Daehangno, Seoul. During the event, Moon Geun Young spoke candidly about her long-awaited return to live performance, marking her first theater role since Romeo and Juliet in 2017.
She revealed that the script played a decisive role in her decision to join the production. “The message of comfort in the script really resonated with me,” she said, adding that the complexity of the character and the gender-free casting approach also drew her in. After repeatedly reading the script, she became determined to take on the challenge.
In Orphans , Moon Geun Young takes on the role of Treat, a character who appears rough and violent on the outside but carries deep emotional wounds and responsibility within. To fully embody the role, she underwent rigorous preparation. “I practiced handling knives a lot,” she shared.
She also admitted that delivering strong language was particularly difficult for her. “I’m not used to swearing, so it didn’t sound natural. I had to get help from people around me and practice extensively.”
Moon Geun Young’s return is especially significant given her past health challenges. In 2017, she was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome, a serious condition that required multiple surgeries. After years of recovery, she announced in 2024 that she had fully recovered. She then resumed acting activities, including a notable appearance in Netflix’s Hellbound Season 2, where she showcased a bold transformation.
The play Orphans , written by American playwright Lyle Kessler, tells the story of an unusual bond formed between a middle-aged gangster and two orphaned brothers. Since its premiere in 1983, the production has received global acclaim, including recognition at the Tony Awards. For Moon Geun Young, this project represents more than just a comeback. It marks a new chapter in her career, one shaped by resilience, growth, and a renewed passion for acting.
