MBC’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown has confirmed its premiere for April 10, drawing attention to IU’s new character, Sung Hee Joo.

IU shared that she chose the project because she was drawn to Sung Hee Joo’s actions and personality. She described the character with three keywords: “ambition, temper, and charm,” hinting at a multifaceted role filled with resilience and determination. “I feel both worried and nervous, but the excitement from knowing that so many people are anticipating this project is even greater. I hope it becomes a drama that viewers can enjoy until the very end,” she said.

Sung Hee Joo, the CEO of Castle Beauty, is a woman who possesses beauty, talent, and wealth, yet constantly faces the limitations of her commoner status. Initially portrayed as someone with uncontrollable ambition and a prickly personality, she gradually reveals a surprising mix of cuteness and charisma as the story unfolds. IU explained that the character’s “proactiveness” is particularly appealing, and teased that Sung Hee Joo will show diverse charms in her relationship with Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo-seok.

The character has spent her entire life trying to prove herself, often hiding her vulnerability behind a deliberately harsh exterior while still revealing moments of loneliness and fragility. IU also highlighted key points for viewers to watch, including the fast-paced storyline and emotional dynamics between characters in the first half, as well as the deep and intense romance that develops later.

She added that she paid close attention to expressing Sung Hee Joo’s emotional states through subtle changes in voice and facial expressions, differentiating between moments of achievement and failure.

Set in a fictional constitutional monarchy version of modern-day Korea, the drama tells the story of a wealthy chaebol heiress who has everything except noble status and a prince who has royal blood but nothing else, as they navigate love and societal barriers. Perfect Crown will premiere on April 10 at 9:40 PM.

Following the sensation created by the 2006 drama Princess Hours, this marks MBC’s return to a constitutional monarchy-themed series after 20 years, raising expectations among fans eager to see how the genre will be reimagined for a new era.
