The Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters has officially claimed one of Hollywood’s most prestigious honors, winning Best Animated Feature at the 98th Academy Awards.
The ceremony took place on March 16 (KST) at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where the film triumphed against a competitive lineup of global animation titles.
Taking the stage to accept the award, Korean-Canadian director Maggie Kang delivered a heartfelt speech that quickly resonated with audiences. “I’m sorry it took so long to create characters who look like me,” she said emotionally. “Now the next generation won’t have to wait anymore. This award is for Koreans all around the world.”

The victory is considered especially significant because KPop Demon Hunters defeated several high-profile contenders, including Zootopia 2, Elio, Arco, and Little Amélie. The intense competition made the film’s win even more meaningful in the global animation landscape.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film was produced by Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. The story follows a K-pop girl group named Huntress who secretly fight evil spirits through their music while protecting the world.
Blending supernatural fantasy with vibrant K-pop culture, the film captured global attention for its striking visuals, energetic performances, and unique storyline. Its heavy use of Korean cultural themes helped bring K-content further into the international animation scene.

Industry observers see the Oscar win as another milestone for the global expansion of Korean culture. With KPop Demon Hunters, Korean storytelling has successfully extended beyond films and dramas into the animation industry, proving once again the worldwide influence of K-content.
The category was highly competitive this year, with 35 animated films qualifying for consideration before the final five nominees were selected for the main awards race. Ultimately, KPop Demon Hunters emerged as the winner, marking a historic moment for Korean-inspired animation on the world’s biggest film stage.
