According to Netflix on March 12 (local time), directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who helmed the original film, will return to direct the sequel. The project will also be the first release under the pair’s exclusive multi-year writing and directing partnership with Netflix in the animation field.
Director Maggie Kang expressed pride in the project’s global reception. “As a Korean director, it makes me incredibly proud that audiences want to see more stories about these Korean characters,” she said. “There’s still so much more to show in the world we created. This is only the beginning.”
Chris Appelhans also shared his excitement about continuing the story. “These characters feel like family to us, and their world has become our second home,” he said. “With the next chapter, we want to show how the characters grow while continuing to push the boundaries of how music, animation, and storytelling come together.”
Released in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters became a massive hit on Netflix, recording over 500 million views and ranking among the most popular films in the platform’s history. The fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X featured in the film also achieved remarkable milestones. The group reportedly became the first K-pop girl group to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the movie’s soundtrack “Golden” won a Grammy Award, marking the first time a K-pop song received the honor.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria praised the creators for building a worldwide fanbase. “Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans didn’t just reach audiences, they created a global fandom that crosses languages, generations, and genres,” she said. “Together with Sony Pictures Animation, we’re excited to expand this universe and bring new stories to fans around the world.”
