The first leading drama role of Kim Minju has drawn attention after recording modest viewership ratings despite marking an important milestone in her career.
According to industry reports, the JTBC Friday drama Shining premiered on March 6 with a nationwide rating of 2.1%, but the second episode saw the figure fall to 1.7%, placing the series in the 1% range early in its broadcast. While the numbers are considered relatively low for a prime-time drama, the show has still generated interest among viewers for its youthful storyline and Minju’s performance.
Shining tells the story of young people who once shared a small world of their own and gradually become each other’s source of belief and guidance in life. In the series, Kim Minju plays Mo Eun-ah, a cheerful and sincere character who reminds viewers of the bright yet uncertain emotions of youth.

The role marks a significant step for the star, who debuted in 2018 as a member of the K-pop project group IZ*ONE before transitioning into acting. For Minju, Shining represents her first drama as the main female lead since entering the acting field.
In the early episodes, Eun-ah is portrayed as a lovable and energetic character who approaches others without hesitation. One memorable moment shows her confidently renting out an entire library during school vacation, highlighting her bold personality. Her bright energy and straightforward charm quickly win over both the male lead Tae-seo and the audience.
Minju’s visuals and gentle presence also contribute to the drama’s emotional tone, amplifying the nostalgic feeling typical of youth romance stories. Her expressive eyes and natural reactions help portray Eun-ah’s developing emotions, especially as the character navigates first love, personal doubts, and dreams for independence.

Despite the pressure of carrying her first lead role, Kim Minju has shown signs of settling comfortably into the character. Rather than playing a purely cheerful figure, she portrays Eun-ah as a layered young woman dealing with the worries of adolescence and the uncertainty of the future.
As the story progresses through the seasons of the characters’ lives, viewers are expected to see how Eun-ah grows beyond her sheltered life caring for her father and begins pursuing independence.
Shining airs every Friday at 8:50 PM KST on JTBC, broadcasting two consecutive episodes each week.
