According to The Hollywood Reporter on December 18, Sony Pictures has officially begun developing a feature-length LABUBU film. Just a month after acquiring the rights, the studio has secured Paul King, the acclaimed British director behind Paddington and Wonka, to helm the project.
Still in the early stages of development, the LABUBU movie is expected to pick up momentum with King’s involvement. Known for his whimsical storytelling and visual charm, King’s direction signals a promising start for the adaptation.

LABUBU, a mischievous yet endearing elf-like character, was created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, inspired by elements of Norse mythology. Since 2019, Chinese toy company Pop Mart has collaborated with Lung to release collectible LABUBU figurines. The toys skyrocketed in global popularity, especially among Gen Z, after being spotted with international stars like Rihanna and BLACKPINK’s Lisa.
The LABUBU phenomenon has translated into major financial success. In the first half of this year alone, Pop Mart reported a staggering 13.9 billion yuan ($1.95 billion) in revenue—more than triple the previous year. Net profits soared to 4.6 billion yuan, nearly quadrupling year-over-year.

With its explosive fanbase and cinematic potential, the LABUBU movie could become the next global family-friendly franchise under Sony’s banner.
