On December 17, SM Entertainment released an official statement addressing Key’s involvement in the ongoing controversy surrounding the so-called “injection aunt,” which is linked to a broader controversy involving comedian Park Na-rae. The agency first apologized for the delayed response, citing the need to coordinate with multiple parties due to overseas tour schedules.
According to SM Entertainment, Key was introduced to the individual, referred to as Mr. Lee, through an acquaintance and initially met him at a hospital located in Seoul’s Gangnam District. At the time, Key believed Mr. Lee was a licensed medical doctor.
“Key continued to receive treatment at the hospital afterward,” the agency explained. “In cases where it was difficult for him to visit the hospital, he received treatment at home several times. Because he believed Mr. Lee was a doctor and there were no indications otherwise, he did not recognize this as a problem.”
However, Key recently became aware of allegations questioning Mr. Lee’s medical credentials and learned for the first time that the individual was not a licensed physician. SM Entertainment stated that the artist is currently experiencing significant confusion and is “deeply reflecting on his lack of awareness.”
In response to the seriousness of the issue, Key has decided to withdraw from his scheduled activities and ongoing television appearances, including popular variety shows Amazing Saturday and I Live Alone.
“Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Key has chosen to step down from all current programs,” the statement continued. “We sincerely apologize to fans and the public for the concern caused.”
The controversy surrounding the “injection aunt” surfaced amid multiple allegations involving Park Na-rae, including claims of workplace harassment, unpaid fees, misuse of company funds, and receiving illegal medical treatment from an unlicensed individual. Park Na-rae has since announced a temporary suspension of her broadcast activities while related matters are addressed.
It has been reported that Key maintained a personal acquaintance with Mr. Lee for over 10 years, further intensifying public attention on the matter.
As the situation continues to unfold, SM Entertainment emphasized that Key is cooperating fully and remains committed to reflecting on the issue.
