On December 6, Cocona posted a heartfelt message through XG’s official social media accounts, explaining that she wanted to open up about a deeply personal journey as she reached the milestone of turning 20.
She described her identity as “transmasculine non-binary”, referring to someone who was assigned female at birth but relates more closely to masculinity, or someone whose identity exists outside the traditional male–female binary.

“As I enter my twenties, I wanted to share a part of myself that has been held deeply in my heart,” Cocona wrote.
She continued by revealing that she underwent top surgery this year: “The hardest part of my life has been accepting and acknowledging myself. Having top surgery helped me take even the smallest step—0.1 of a step—toward moving forward with more honesty.”

Cocona also shared a new photo of herself wearing only a black jacket over her bare torso, holding a flower, deliberately revealing the post-surgery scars across her chest. The image, symbolizing both strength and vulnerability, quickly drew support from fans around the world.
“I hope this message becomes a small light to someone out there,” she added. “And I hope my love reaches everyone who needs it.”

XG, a seven-member girl group consisting entirely of Japanese members, debuted in 2022 under XGALX, a label founded by Korean-American producer Jakops (Simon Jakops).
Jakops responded with admiration and support: “I am deeply moved by Cocona’s courage to share her heart with the world. We will continue to support each member so they can live authentically and love themselves as individuals.”
Cocona’s revelation marks a significant moment in K-pop’s evolving landscape, where conversations about gender identity and self-acceptance are gradually emerging on global platforms. Her message has already been praised for its sincerity and potential to inspire fans navigating similar journeys.
