Japanese model Kiko Mizuhara, long known in Korea for her past dating rumors with G-Dragon, has spoken openly about cultural differences between Korean and Japanese people and even addressed stereotypes about relationships in Japan.

Kiko recently appeared on the YouTube channel SPNS TV, where she shared candid thoughts about how she views the two countries’ social dynamics.

Reflecting on her experience living and working in Korea, Kiko said: “Korean people feel incredibly close to one another. It’s like there’s barely any boundary between freedom, privacy, or personal space. It’s fascinating. Japanese culture sets clearer boundaries, which can sometimes make you feel lonely.”

She added that Japanese people often take more time to build trust, while Koreans warm up quickly.

Kiko also revealed that as someone of mixed heritage (Korean–American), she often feels more open than what might be typical in Japan.

She praised how quickly Korean friends embrace her: “All my Korean friends welcomed me right away, saying ‘Kiko, you’re my friend,’ and we immediately became like sisters. Even those words unnie, dongsaeng make people feel closer.”

When asked whether Japanese couples keep more distance even when dating, Kiko replied: “It depends on the person, but compared to Korea, yes, Japan keeps more distance. If you text too much, people even call you ‘menhera’ like you’re too much.”

She also noted cultural differences in the entertainment industry: “In Korea, if an idol starts working with one stylist or hair designer, I heard they tend to stay with them consistently.”

Kiko laughed when addressing a stereotype often discussed online: “Some people say cheating is normal in Japan… and honestly, that’s why I don’t date Japanese men.”

She then pointed out how Japanese media historically influenced public attitudes: “Until recently, most TV MCs were men. When I was little, I thought it was funny, but looking back, it created a harmful atmosphere. They would openly criticize women or say harmful things without realizing it.”

However, she believes things are changing: “Young people don’t watch TV as much now. I think that’s why there are more gentle younger men.”

When asked whether the shift might be influenced by the popularity of K-dramas, Kiko responded with humor: “Maybe. But Korean men cheat too, don’t they?”

Her playful but honest remark immediately drew attention from viewers, especially considering her past dating rumors with G-Dragon.
