Diogo Jota, the late Liverpool star, and his brother — who previously played for Portuguese club Penafiel — both tragically passed away this summer in a car accident in northern Spain. The football world has been in mourning ever since. The clubs of both players led heartfelt memorials globally in the months that followed.

However, during a tribute video honoring notable figures in football who passed away over the past year, Real Madrid mistakenly used an image of Andre da Silva, a player currently with Elche in La Liga, instead of Andre Silva, the late brother of Diogo Jota.

📝 Real Madrid Issues Apology for Memorial Error

“Real Madrid C.F. apologizes to Elche C.F. and player Andre da Silva for mistakenly including his image in our memorial video, instead of that of Andre Silva, the brother of Liverpool player Diogo Jota. We regret this unfortunate error,” the club posted on social media after correcting the video.

Following the broadcast of the video during the club’s Annual General Assembly, Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez also offered a direct and personal apology regarding the incident.

⚽ Past Tributes by Real Madrid and Liverpool Players

Prior to this, Real Madrid had laid a wreath in memory of Jota and Silva ahead of their Champions League away match at Anfield. Manager Xabi Alonso placed the wreath at a memorial near the ground — the same Anfield where Jota etched his name into Liverpool history by winning several major honors, including the Premier League title last season.

Former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who left Liverpool this past summer, also prepared a personal wreath with a heartfelt message remembering their friendship:

“My friend Diogo. Everyone misses you deeply but loves you always. The memories of you and Andre will live forever. I smile every time I think of you and will always cherish the moments we shared. Miss you every day. Love, Trent and family. Forever No. 20. YNWA.”

Alexander-Arnold and Jota played 145 matches together for Liverpool, helping the club secure a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and one Community Shield during their time together.
