Chinese idol-turned-actor Gao Hanyu, who rose to renewed fame through Call Me By Fire in 2021, recently shared a terrifying experience from his rookie years. Appearing on the variety show Happy Fun Wind, he recalled getting lost alone in Cambodia while filming a dating reality show—and even recording what he believed could be his “last video” to his mother.
“It was my first time going abroad,” Gao said. Originally scheduled to travel with two or three cast members, a sudden program change forced him to fly solo. The plan was to transfer flights to Siem Reap, but he mistakenly got off in Phnom Penh.

He remained unaware of the mistake until he phoned home to check in—only to be told he had landed in the wrong city. In a stroke of bad luck, his phone service also stopped working at that exact moment.
With no communication and fewer and fewer Chinese travelers around him, the star stood stranded outside the airport. Fortunately, a Chinese man noticed his situation and helped arrange a hotel for him. But safety was far from guaranteed.

“The hotel room door couldn’t be locked,” Gao recalled. “I had to prop a chair against the door.”
Panicked and unable to reach anyone from the production, he filmed a video for his mother, thinking he might not make it back.

“I said, ‘Mom, I think I’m done for today. I might not be able to return…’ and then I confessed a bunch of things I had done wrong in the past,” he admitted with a laugh.
Luckily, Gao soon calmed himself and found a solution. He used the hotel front desk phone to contact the crew, then asked the staff to help arrange transport and draw a map to guide the driver. Although the driver didn’t speak Chinese, Gao managed to match the map to road signs along the way, eventually reaching his intended destination safely.
Looking back, Gao described the incident as both frightening and unforgettable—a chaotic first overseas trip that turned into a near‑“farewell confession” to his mother.
