On September 24, Son Ye Jin made her long-awaited film comeback after seven years through director Park Chan Wook’s new movie “No Other Choice”, which has drawn 2.66 million viewers and continues to perform strongly at the box office. In the film, Son plays Mi Ri, the wife of Man Soo (Lee Byung Hun), a man suddenly fired from his company. Her emotional portrayal of a woman who keeps her family together amid crisis earned critical acclaim and audience praise alike.

This comeback marks Son’s first movie since “The Negotiation” (2018), where she also co-starred with her now-husband Hyun Bin. Despite initial fears before the release, Son successfully overcame her anxiety with the film’s commercial and critical success.

At the 30th Busan International Film Festival, where “No Other Choice” opened the event, Son candidly confessed, “I sometimes wonder how often and how long I can keep doing this kind of work as an actress.” Later interviews revealed that Mi Ri’s role was originally smaller in the script, but Son decided to take on the project because she “wanted to show more of her acting after seven years away from the big screen” — a decision she now calls “the right one.”

After “The Negotiation”, Son reunited with Hyun Bin in the global hit drama “Crash Landing on You,” which transformed their on-screen chemistry into real-life romance. The couple married in 2022 and welcomed their first son that November — a major life turning point for the actress.

Reflecting on motherhood, Son said, “My life completely changed. It’s not about what has or hasn’t changed — everything did.” She admitted to feeling concerned about how audiences might view her as a “melodrama actress” after giving birth, explaining that she worked hard to balance her identities as both a mother and an artist.

Son has continued to actively promote “No Other Choice”, appearing in stage greetings even in its fourth week of release. Recently, she delighted fans by sharing several photos on social media with her new short hairstyle, writing, “Finally coming to meet you again! Let’s meet at the theater this Saturday — who hasn’t watched ‘No Other Choice’ yet? Or wants to watch it again? Let’s gather!”
