On the September 26 broadcast of KBS 2TV’s Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant, singer and actor Kim Jaejoong shared the emotional story of his father’s past battle with lung cancer.
The episode began with Kim Jaejoong cooking with his sisters, who joked about dieting. Jaejoong introduced them to homemade Greek yogurt and demonstrated a five-minute Mediterranean-inspired diet kimbap made with brown rice and tuna yogurt instead of mayonnaise. His sisters were pleasantly surprised, praising the healthy twist on a classic dish.
The tone shifted when Jaejoong opened up about his father’s hardships. He revealed that his father once faced enormous challenges, including bankruptcy that left him with debts amounting to hundreds of millions of won. On top of that, his father went through a spiritual calling experience (shinnaerim), which caused him deep psychological pain and even led others to treat him as if he had lost his mind.
The most serious ordeal came with a lung cancer diagnosis. Jaejoong recalled, “During chemotherapy, my father lost his appetite. But he only ate what my mom prepared, and she worked tirelessly to provide him with everything that was said to be good for the lungs.” His mother personally sourced and cooked healthful meals every day, supporting him through treatment. Jaejoong continued, “After two years of chemotherapy and four more years of eating my mom’s meals, his CT scan finally came back normal. He was declared completely cured.”
The heartfelt story left viewers touched, showing not only the father’s resilience but also the family’s unwavering love and support.
