On the September 19 broadcast of KBS2’s Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant, singer and actor Kim Jaejoong faced an emotional family revelation that left him teary-eyed. The episode, themed around special dishes for the upcoming Chuseok holiday, featured Kim Jaejoong returning to his hometown to cook with his mother.
During the visit, Kim Jaejoong’s father reflected on the hardships endured by the family, expressing guilt over broken promises. “I once said I would never let her lift a hand in hardship, but I failed. I feel like a sinner,” he confessed, apologizing to Kim Jaejoong’s mother, whose health has recently suffered.
Kim Jaejoong’s mother then revealed a difficult chapter from the past that even her son did not fully know. She explained that Kim Jaejoong’s father, once a successful businessman, went bankrupt and was left with a massive debt of ₩100 million, a devastating sum at the time.
The collapse left Kim Jaejoong’s father in a fragile state. “I was so shocked that I couldn’t even recognize the people around me. Everyone said I looked like I’d gone mad,” he admitted. His wife added: “After that, he suffered from a spiritual illness. When he resisted shaman initiation, his condition worsened, and he seemed almost insane. He has truly weathered countless storms and near-death experiences.”
Hearing this, Kim Jaejoong was visibly moved, especially as his mother recalled how she had to become the family’s pillar overnight. “Even when I wanted to die, I couldn’t. With the children crying from hunger, how could I?” she said, wiping away tears. The raw honesty of her story left both mother and son in tears.
