At the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF 2025), actress Kim Da-mi opened up about the challenges she faced while filming the highly anticipated Netflix sci-fi disaster blockbuster The Great Flood.
On September 19, director Kim Byung-woo and Kim Da-mi attended a stage greeting at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae. The film is featured in the Korean Cinema Today – Special Premiere section and has already generated strong buzz ahead of its December 19 global release.
Reflecting on watching the film with audiences at BIFF, Kim Da-mi shared: “I didn’t expect to see it here at the Busan International Film Festival. Watching it on such a big screen made me nervous but also deeply moved. Experiencing it together with the audience was emotional and unforgettable.”

Director Kim Byung-woo explained the significance of the title: “The name itself leaves a strong impression, and I thought it would be interesting to start a story that way. But the movie doesn’t end with just the impression of a great flood. There are genre variations, and the way the theme is used gives it different meanings.”
Speaking about her character Anna, Kim Da-mi said: “At first, audiences may wonder who Anna really is. I didn’t want her personality traits to be revealed too early. As the story progresses, Anna transforms, and I wanted to portray that growth.”
Kim Da-mi also revealed the physical challenges of shooting water-heavy scenes: “I didn’t realize how much water would be involved. I tried to get used to it before filming, but some scenes required us to act as if we were underwater even when we weren’t. I learned as I went along, and it was a difficult but rewarding experience.”
The Great Flood depicts humanity’s desperate fight for survival on Earth’s final day, as catastrophic floods engulf the planet and a group of survivors struggle inside a submerged apartment complex.
This year’s BIFF, running from September 17 to 26, showcases 242 official films—17 more than last year. Including Community BIFF selections, a total of 324 works are being presented, highlighting the festival’s reputation as one of Asia’s largest celebrations of cinema.
