On September 23 (local time), cameras captured First Lady Melania Trump’s reluctant reaction during U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
As Trump delivered heated remarks on immigration, war, and dismissed climate change as a “hoax,” Melania sat in the audience with her signature look of displeasure and detachment.
When Trump concluded his address with the words, “May God bless the nations of the world,” world leaders and officials at the UN headquarters broke into applause. Melania, however, remained still, her left arm resting on the chair, appearing entirely disconnected from those around her.
It wasn’t until a man seated in front of her aimed a camera in her direction that she reluctantly clapped a few times, all while maintaining her trademark expressionless face.
This is far from the first time Melania’s uneasy demeanor toward Trump has been on full display at official events. During Trump’s first presidential term, cameras famously caught her smiling when he looked back at her, only to have her expression instantly vanish once he turned away. Other viral moments include her looking visibly irritated during public conversations with him, refusing to take his hand on a red carpet, and showing signs of exasperation at official ceremonies.

Clips of these moments have gone viral on YouTube under titles like “Melania who didn’t want to be First Lady” or “The Melania memes you watch when you’re down.”
Still, Melania is not always solemn. During her 2017 visit to South Korea, she actively engaged in an embassy campaign with students, smiling warmly—especially when greeting Minho from K-pop group SHINee. At the end of Trump’s first term, as the couple exited the White House, Melania was also seen radiating joy, greeting those around her with perhaps her brightest public smile yet.
