When NewJeans debuted in 2022, few could have predicted their meteoric rise. Within a year, they weren’t just another girl group—they were the it group of their generation. With hits like “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” “Ditto,” and “OMG,” the members ushered in what fans fondly dubbed the “NewJeans era.”

But in 2025, things look very different. Known now as NJZ, the group has been inactive for months due to a bitter legal feud with ADOR, the label that once managed them. And as time drags on, fans are beginning to ask a new question: If NJZ does return, will K-pop still have space for them?

The trouble began in April 2024 when tensions between ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin and parent company HYBE spilled into the public. What followed was a drawn-out power struggle that soon dragged NewJeans into the fray. By November that year, the members declared they would no longer continue under ADOR, citing a “breakdown of trust.” They opened independent social media accounts, teased overseas shows, and even began using a new name NJZ signaling a fresh start.

But that independence was short-lived. In March 2025, a court sided with ADOR, granting an injunction that blocked the members from signing contracts, releasing music, or performing. The group’s appeals were dismissed, leaving their third anniversary to pass quietly, without music or celebrations.

While NJZ has been silent, the K-pop industry has not. Fifth-generation girl groups are debuting rapidly, and groups that once trailed behind NewJeans have solidified themselves at the top both in Korea and abroad.

This shifting landscape makes fans wonder: even if NJZ returned tomorrow, would their impact still be the same?

On forums like theqoo, opinions are split. Some believe NJZ’s time has already passed:

  • Honestly, I don’t really miss them. There are way too many groups to replace them.
  • Realistically, trials don’t just wrap up quickly… by the time it’s over, it’ll be too late.
  • Even if they return, I don’t think I can see them the same as before.
  • They’ve become the very definition of self-sabotage.

Others remain hopeful, pointing to their unique sound and the loyalty of their fanbase:

  • As long as they come back, they’ll do well. Plenty of people are waiting.
  • If it weren’t for Bang Si-hyuk’s tantrums, they’d still be on top.
  • Waiting for their new songs, tbh. Nothing hits like NewJeans.

And then there are those who capture the harsh reality of K-pop: “Nowhere replaces idols faster than K-pop” and “They should have just finished the contract with HYBE and left quietly, instead of wasting years in lawsuits.”

Industry insiders largely agree that reconciliation with ADOR is unlikely a “bridge already burned.” That means NJZ’s future depends entirely on the courts, and legal battles in Korea are rarely resolved quickly. Even if they do come back, regaining their old status will not be easy. K-pop thrives on momentum, and after months or years of silence, the market may have already moved on. Still, many fans cling to the hope of hearing new music again. And if there’s one thing NJZ proved in their short but powerful run, it’s that they can redefine the scene when given the chance.

For now, though, the group’s story remains one of K-pop’s biggest “what-ifs.” What do you think? Can NJZ return as the icons they once were, or has K-pop already written its next chapter without them?
