“ Even a Box Office Star Couldn’t Save It.”
That sentiment echoed among viewers as the show’s final episode, aired on September 14, recorded a dismal 2.4% nationwide rating (Nielsen Korea), marking its lowest ever and a steep fall from its promising 8.1% premiere.

Twelve was the flagship title in KBS2’s new weekend mini-series slot and generated early buzz with its unique concept—drawing inspiration from the Eastern zodiac’s 12 guardian deities. Viewers were also intrigued by Ma Dong-seok ’s return to drama after nearly a decade, joined by acting heavyweights Sung Dong-il, Seo In-guk, Lee Joo-bin, Go Kyu-pil, and Kang Mi-na.
However, the drama quickly lost traction. Criticism emerged almost immediately, with viewers pointing to a confusing narrative and low-quality CGI, while Ma Dong-seok’s familiar “tough guy” persona was seen as repetitive and uninspired. One viewer commented, “He’s playing the same role again. I’ve seen this before—many times.”

The finale wrapped with a predictable good-over-evil ending as the celestial warriors defeated dark forces to restore light to the world. Yet, it wasn’t enough to rekindle audience interest. Instead, attention turned to a mysterious new character introduced in the final moments—suggesting plans for a second season.
Originally conceived as a season-based series, Twelve may now face uncertainty regarding its continuation. Viewer fatigue and poor reception may put a potential Season 2 on shaky ground.

Following Twelve’s underwhelming run, KBS2 is betting on its next project, Walking On Thin Ice (English title) / Eun-Soo’s Good Day (literal title), featuring legendary actress Lee Young-ae. The upcoming drama revolves around a school parent and a double-faced teacher entangled in a crime after stumbling upon a drug-filled bag. The network hopes this suspense-filled story will turn the tide and recover audience trust.

While Twelve had all the makings of a hit—big stars, high concept, and rich mythology—its failure highlights that casting alone can’t carry a show. Viewers now await to see whether Eunsoo’s Good Day can break the curse of KBS2’s struggling weekend slot.
